Welcome to Matthews, North Carolina

Matthews began as a small farming community in the 1800s. Cotton farmers completely cleared the land of trees, leaving nothing but stumps as far as the eye could see and establishing the community’s first name as Stumptown. By the turn of the century the town was developing rapidly and Matthews today is a town of some 27,000 residents. It is located approximately 10 miles southeast of Charlotte and remains a fast-growing community, thanks to its proximity to the metro area. The town also offers direct access to Highways 74 and 85 as well as the Charlotte-DouglasInternationalAirport.

Residents enjoy Matthews' small-town charm and excellent quality of life. It is a tight-knit community with a full array of local services, good schools, a low crime rate and a variety of housing. One can find an affordable mix of single-family homes, condominiums and townhouses here in this quaint town. The PresbyterianHospital of Matthews is also located nearby. Many corporations have headquarters located in the town due to its easy access to public transportation. Matthews continues to be one of the state’s most affluent and sought-after communities and a fantastic place to live and work.
